Acting Prime Minister Ehud Olmert told President Bush on Thursday that Middle East peace efforts could not progress if “terrorist organizations” like Hamas joined the Palestinian government after elections this month, according to a statement from Mr. Olmert’s office. Israeli politics had been effectively on hold since Prime Minister Ariel Sharon suffered a stroke on Jan. 4.
