Israel could hold talks in the future with the Palestinian Islamic militant group Hamas if it disarms and recognises the Jewish state’s right to exist, Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz said on Wednesday. Mofaz’s remarks, in a speech aired on Channel Two television, suggested that Israel anticipates Hamas will make significant gains against Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’s Fatah faction in legislative elections scheduled for January 25.
