Cairo, Riyadh scramble to diffuse tensions between Damascus and UN

Egypt and Saudi Arabia agreed Tuesday to send a high-level Saudi envoy to Syria in an attempt to diffuse the tensions between Damascus and the United Nations over the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, diplomats said. Following talks in the Saudi city of Jeddah, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and King Abdullah agreed on the necessity of Syria’s cooperation with the UN commission that is investigating Hariri’s killing last February, an Egyptian diplomat said. The two leaders did not speak to reporters, but the diplomats from the two countries said the envoy would fly to Damascus on Wednesday. Full Story
