The United States sharply criticized a five-year jail term handed down to Egyptian opposition leader Ayman Nur and said it calls into question its key Middle East ally’s commitment to democracy. “The United States is deeply troubled by the conviction today of Egyptian politician Ayman Nur by an Egyptian court,” the White House said in a statement, after Nur was sentenced to five years in prison in a Cairo court. “The conviction of Mr. Nur, the runner-up in Egypt’s 2005 presidential elections, calls into question Egypt’s commitment to democracy, freedom, and the rule of law,” it said.Full Story
