President George W. Bush says he is “confident” that he can reach an agreement with Senator John McCain over legislative restrictions on U.S. interrogations of captives in the fight against global terrorism. “We want to make sure we’re in a position to be able to interrogate without torture” because there are “people who still want to hurt us,” Bush said Monday. McCain, the nation’s most famous former prisoner of war, has been pressing for the restrictions – approved by the Senate – to be adopted in intense three-way negotiations with the House and the administration.
