Mohammed Issa, a career officer in Saddam Hussein’s army, had long vowed never to return to the military until US troops left Iraq. Yet last week, responding to a nationwide plea from the Iraqi government, he changed his mind and headed, with mixed feelings, to a recruiting center. ”If the army doesn’t return to the way it was before, Iraq will never settle down,” Issa said, explaining why he decided to give Iraq’s new army a second try, despite the half-dozen car bombs that have hit the Baghdad recruiting center over the past two years, the risk of being branded a collaborator, and the humiliation he feels at working alongside US soldiers.Full Story
