Syrian officials want a “professional” UN probe into the murder of former Lebanese premier Rafiq Hariri, according to a Sudanese offical leading a new mediation initiative. “All confirmed that they want the investigation conducted by the (UN) international commission to be professional,” Mustafa Osman Ismail told reporters in Cairo, after meeting with officials in Lebanon and Syria. Neither party wants Syria “to be targeted” through the commission, said Ismail, Sudan’s former foreign minister who is now an adviser to President Omar al-Beshir.
