A senior Iraqi official said that Australian troops deployed in southern Iraq were no longer needed and could be asked to withdraw following the election of a new parliament next month. The spokesman for Iraqi Prime Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari, Laith Kubba, told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation that he had recently visited al-Muthanna province and its capital, Samawah, where the 450 Australians are based, and found the area safe.
