A car bomb exploded Wednesday in the main business district of Srinagar, the summer capital of India’s Jammu- Kashmir state, killing at least two people and injuring 40, officials said. Heavy gun fire was heard soon after the explosion; it was not clear who was firing at whom. No one immediately claimed responsibility for the blast, but suspicion fell on Islamic rebels who have been fighting for independence or merger with neighboring Pakistan since 1989.
