In an odd twist in the tenuous relationship between the Mexican government and the Zapatista Indian-rights and erstwhile guerrilla organization, the national peace commissioner sent condolences to the masked activist known as “Marcos” for the death of the man presumed to be his father. “I am writing these lines to express my condolences over the death of the man who said publicly he was your father,” Peace Commissioner Luis Alvarez, who is responsible for the government’s talks with the Zapatista National Liberation Army (EZLN), wrote.
