The French cabinet was expected to approve a three-month extension of emergency police powers in order to subdue the wave of suburban unrest sweeping the country, but overnight figures showed the level of violence continuing to subside. Meanwhile the head of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso said the EU is prepared to release 50 million euros (59 million dollars) in aid for areas damaged by the two and a half weeks of unrest.
