Prime Minister John Howard has denied new anti-terror laws will stifle media freedom in Australia after a press watchdog group described the legislation as authoritarian. The package of laws proposed by Howard’s conservative government upgrades the little-used offence of sedition so it carries a seven-year jail term for threatening the “peace, order and good government of the commonwealth”.
