A Colombian militiaman who supposedly demobilized early this year as part of the government’s peace process with the rightist fighters was killed in combat with police in a rural part of the nation’s northwest, authorities said in Bogota on Thursday. The dead paramilitary, who was carrying two fragmentation grenades, was identified only as “The Iguana,” according to the official communique. “The Iguana,” who was part of a group active in the combat zone, had laid down his arms on Jan. 30 in keeping with the peace process that United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia (AUC) paramilitaries had worked out with the Colombian government.
