Regional elections turned violent on Sunday as the police and the governing party’s militia engaged in running clashes with opposition supporters in the streets of the main town in Zanzibar, which is a semiautonomous part of Tanzania. On the edges of the town, Stone Town, the police fired tear gas and water cannons while militiamen for the party, Chama Cha Mapinduzi, beat suspected opponents.
