Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak held unexpected talks with his beleaguered Syrian counterpart Bashar Assad Friday to discuss Damascus’ crisis with the West over the killing of a former Lebanese leader. At the meeting in Damascus, Mubarak raised the issue of efforts under way at the Security Council to impose sanctions on Syria if it does not cooperate with the U.N. investigation into former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri’s Feb. 14 assassination, Egypt’s Middle East News Agency said.
