UN will impose ‘measures’ if no Ivory Coast peace: official

The international community will impose “measures” against political factions in the Ivory Coast if they fail to reach a peace agreement in the divided west African nation, a United Nations official said. “I believe I have been heard because no one wants something imposed on him,” said Adamantios Vassilakis, head of the UN sanctions committee. If no agreement is reached among the opposing sides, “the international community will surely take steps,” said Vassilakis after meeting with the leader of the rebel New Forces (FN), Guillaume Soro, and the former head of state Henri Konan Bedie, president of the opposition Democratic Party of the Ivory Coast (PDCI). “I’ve had the chance to see all the participants in the (peace) process and my impression is that everyone wants to find a solution,” said the Greek diplomat who is on a three-day visit to the country.
