State leaders to focus federal dollars on border security

Arizona officials say they want to focus more of the state’s federal Homeland Security dollars on border enforcement and disaster preparation. Until now, a large portion of Arizona’s federal grants have been used by state and local public safety agencies to buy equipment ranging from communication vans and fire vehicles to biohazard protection suits and gas masks. “Let’s start using some of this gear and quit focusing on buying more gear,” said Arizona Homeland Security Director Frank Navarrete, who has control of the federal Homeland Security grants.
