A “ghost” from Brazil’s dictatorial past caused a stir in Congress on Tuesday as former ruling-party chief and ex-guerrilla leader Jose Genoino was testifying to a committee regarding corruption allegations. Genoino, who up until three months ago was chairman of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s Workers’ Party, or PT, was summoned to testify by a congressional committee investigating allegations of corruption in the party and the administration itself. As Genoino’s testimony began, former Col. Licio Augusto, who was responsible for the capture of Genoino, then a guerrilla, in 1973, made an entrance.
