Clashes between Al-Qaida militants and police continued for a second day in this eastern Saudi Arabian city, a day after two extremists and a police officer were killed. Police are surrounding an unspecified number of militants holed up in a building in Dammam, 400 km (250 miles) northeast of the capital, Riyadh, and have cordoned off all streets leading to the area. The violence prompted US authorities to close the American consulate in nearby Dhahran until further notice and Saudi police to evacuate residents from buildings in Dammam near the scene of the violence.
