Eager to allay fears that the death of rebel leader-turned-statesman John Garang would derail Sudans fragile peace, the Khartoum government has moved quickly to install Garangs replacement. Salva Kiir Mayardit, Garangs deputy, is to be sworn in Tuesday as the country’s new senior vice president. Garangs death in a helicopter crash last week, which sparked three days of rioting across Sudan that left at least 130 people dead and hundreds injured, raised concerns that the peace deal that ended the countrys 21-year civil war was in danger of unravelling.
