Suspected separatist rebels Sunday blew up a crucial oil pipeline and nearby homes in India’s northeast, shutting down operations, police said. No one was hurt in the pre-dawn attack at the pipeline of the state-run Oil India Ltd. in Sivasagar in Assam state, 350 kilometers (215 miles) northeast of the state capital Gauhati, police said. The pipeline brings crude from Oil India Ltd’s pumping stations and oil fields in eastern Assam via a refinery in Numaligarh town to Gauhati. The attack was seen as a show of strength by the outlawed United Liberated Front of Asom ahead of India’s Aug. 15 Independence Day celebrations, the officer said on customary condition of anonymity.
