Australia backs the trial by a US military commission of one of its citizens on terror charges despite allegations that the process is rigged, Prime Minister John Howard said. He was responding to reports that two US military prosecutors said in leaked emails written last year that the military commissions set up to try suspects held at the Guantanamo Bay naval base in Cuba were seriously flawed. Howard, a close ally in the US-led “war on terror” who has contributed troops to the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq, says Australia has been given assurances the allegations have been dealt with.
