Two weeks after declaring a state of emergency in three southern provinces, the Thai government on July 26 approved all the 14 measures proposed by the National Reconciliation Commission (NRC) aimed at bringing an end to violence in the region. The NRC-proposed measures include a review of all court cases since January 4, 2004, when the unrest broke out, the improvement of legal counsel of detainees, and the setting up of a local committee comprising both Buddhist and Muslim religious leaders. The measures also include a commitment to improving forensics work on murder investigations, and the deployment of more qualified officials to work in the southern provinces. Full Story
