THE Abu Sayyaf and the Jemaah Islamiah(JI) in the Southeast Asian region are targeting international maritime industry as a likely avenue for attack by the terrorists groups, the Malaysian National News Agency, quoting Australia’s opposition leader Kim Beazley as its source. Speaking at the annual transport conference AusIntermodal 2005 in Sydney, Beazley said Australia was “way behind the eight ball” in terms of maritime security, the MNNA reported. He warned al-Qaeda would take advantage of gaps in Australia’s maritime security. “Al-Qaeda is now moving over into the maritime area, they’re conservative, they’re slow to move and when they have a formula in place essentially land-based they tend to stick to it,” he said.
