An Internet statement attributed to the group al-Qaida in Iraq claimed responsibility Saturday for the kidnapping of two Algerian diplomats this week. The claim’s authenticity could not be determined. It said the Algerian diplomats were targeted because their government had ignored warnings against deepening the country’s ties with the U.S.-backed Iraqi leadership. The chief of Algeria’s diplomatic mission, Ali Belaroussi, and fellow Algerian diplomat, Azzedine Belkadi, were seized Thursday at gunpoint from a street in the upscale Mansour district of western Baghdad.
