Investigators in Mexico’s capital are treating the attack on the coach of a popular soccer team as a kidnapping, but said Wednesday the victim’s family has not sought their help. Ruben Omar Romano, 47, was forced from his car by five armed assailants and abducted Tuesday afternoon outside his team’s practice facility in southern Mexico City. Family members and the soccer club Cruz Azul have not filed a formal police report about the abduction. People in Mexico are often reluctant to report kidnappings to police, out of fear that corrupt officers may be involved in the abductions or that authorities might kill the victim along with the kidnappers in any rescue effort.
