Three British Soldiers in Iraq Facing War Crimes Charges

Three British soldiers face war crimes charges on suspicion of inhumane treatment of detainees in Iraq, the government said Tuesday. One of the soldiers is also charged with manslaughter in the death of an Iraqi civilian. It was the first time British troops have faced war crimes charges stemming from the Iraq war, a spokesman for the Ministry of Defense said. The troops will face a British court-martial under the International Criminal Court Act in connection with events surrounding the death of a hotel receptionist shortly after he was arrested in September 2003 along with other Iraqi civilians and taken to a British military base, Atty.
