The United States, Pakistan and Afghanistan need to improve their cooperation to crush suspected Taliban and Al-Qaeda fighters staging raids in Afghan territory, a senior US official said. The official implicitly confirmed that bin Laden was hiding somewhere in a mountainous region of the border, saying “have you been up in that region?” when asked why US-led forces had not captured bin Laden nearly four years after the September 11 attacks. The official warned that violence in Afghanistan was likely to increase ahead of landmark elections there set for September and said more needed to be done to secure the Afghanistan-Pakistan border.
