China accepts the U.S. military presence in Asia and is not pursuing a new version of the “Monroe Doctrine” that aims to oust the Americans, according to a top Communist Party opinion leader. The official, Zheng Bijian, a former adviser to Deng Xiaoping and Jiang Zemin and now head of a research institute, the China Reform Forum, told an audience in Washington on Thursday that viewing the emergence of the most populous country in the world as a threat was a “serious strategic misjudgment of China’s direction in the 21st century.” Full Story
