A defiant Lucio Gutiérrez, the former president of Ecuador who was forced out of power seven weeks ago by angry mobs, lashed out against political foes Thursday, demanded early elections and promised to return in “weeks.” In a phone interview with The Herald during a break in his activities in New York, Gutiérrez blamed a coalition of former bankers, traditional parties and left-wing elements for plotting his removal from office, which came after the armed forces withdrew their support as his presidential palace was under attack by protesters on April 20.
