America’s poor image in the Middle East continues to stymie the Bush administration’s efforts to promote democracy in the region, a bipartisan foreign policy task force announced in a report scheduled for release today. The task force, organized by the Council on Foreign Relations and chaired by former secretary of state Madeleine Albright and Vin Weber, a former Republican congressman from Minnesota, said the distrust is so strong that nongovernmental organizations are reluctant to accept State Department funds ”fearing that this would taint these organizations in the eyes of their constituencies.” Full Story
