Residents of Zimbabwe’s capital clashed with police, damaging property and vehicles in the first major protest against a sweep on illegal traders which has seen nearly 18,000 arrests countrywide, police said on Thursday. Police have arrested more than 10,000 people mainly in Harare and another 7,650 in the central city of Gweru since last week, seeking to subdue a black market economy that has thrived on shortages of foreign currency and basic commodities.
