U.S. forces waged gun battles backed by airstrikes in western Iraq, killing 24 insurgents, including a dozen tracked down in the desert who were believed to be members of Abu Musab Zarqawi’s militant group, the U.S. military said Tuesday. In the air, a U.S. military helicopter was hit by insurgent gunfire and forced to make an emergency landing.
