U.S. Looking to Help Southern Sudan’s Ex-Rebels
The United States may soon begin to help southern Sudan’s former rebels with military modernization as efforts to implement a peace deal gather steam, Deputy Secretary of State Robert Zoellick said on Friday. After a meeting with John Garang, head of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM), Zoellick and other officials said a joint Pentagon-State Department team will visit the SPLM stronghold of Rumbek in a few weeks to assess what is needed.
