Russian officials warned that Shamil Basayev, the Chechen rebel who has claimed responsibility for the country’s worst terrorist acts, was preparing large attacks to coincide with the 60th anniversary of the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany, on May 9. Mr. Basayev’s supporters have attacked before on Victory Day, killing 43 at a military parade in Dagestan in 2002 and assassinating Chechnya’s president, Akhmad Kadyrov, last year. This year’s ceremonies in Moscow will include dozens of heads of state, including President Bush. A spokesman for the Federal Security Service said the warnings were being taken seriously. Full Story
