The army is recruiting more troops from other regions for deployment in the restive deep South, said assistant army chief Gen Lertrat Ratanavanich yesterday. Rank-and-file soldiers and officers from the North, Northeast and Central Region would be sent to work in the southernmost provinces of Narathiwat, Pattani and Yala in shifts, each lasting about six months to a year, he said. ”This is to let soldiers gain new experience. I don’t believe army soldiers are afraid. All of them want to work in the South, so we told them to apply for southern missions on a voluntary basis first,” Gen Lertrat said.
