A Dutch prosecutor has accused businessman Frans van Anraat of selling chemicals to the Iraqi regime of former President Saddam Hussein in the full knowledge that they would be used in genocidal killing. Indicating that he would plead that Van Anraat was acting on behalf of the state, his lawyer, Willem van Schaik, said the defendant was under the protection of the Dutch interior ministry and the secret service, which had supplied him with a safe house and a portable phone.
