One of the alleged Valentine’s Day bombers, Gappel Bannah Asali alias Boy Negro, pleaded guilty Monday to multiple murder charges in connection with the blast that killed four and injured several others. Arraigned by a Makati court, Asali admitted his participation in the bombing while two others accused—Angelo Trinidad alias “Abu Khalil” and Gamal Baharan alias “Tapay”—denied their involvement. Asali supposedly provided the chemicals used in the Makati bombing while the other two planted the bomb that ripped a passenger bus apart. Also charged in the case were Khadaffy Janjalani, chieftain of the Abu Sayyaf Group; Jainal Sali alias Abu Solaiman and a certain Jacky, who is still at large. The Abu Sayyaf claimed responsibility for the Makati blast as well as the two other explosions in the cities of Davao and General Santos and the group’s leaders are being tried in absentia.
