British shoe bomb plotter wanted in US on terrorism charges

The British man convicted this week of plotting to blow up an airliner using a shoe bomb, is also wanted in the US on seven counts of terrorism, it emerged yesterday. The US indictment goes further than the charges Saajid Badat pleaded guilty to on Monday at the Old Bailey. US investigators allege that Badat “aided and abetted” Richard Reid in his plot to detonate a shoe bomb aboard a plane flying to the US. That plot only failed when passengers on board the Paris to Miami flight overpowered Reid in December 2001. The US alleges that Badat, 25, from Gloucester, communicated directly with Reid to “coordinate” their terrorist activities through email accounts, and plotted to attack US interests other than planes.
