I.Coast rebels say international mediation dead after attack in west

International mediation of the crisis in Ivory Coast has been buried by the government’s “acts of war,” the west African state’s rebels said after an attack on a rebel-held town in the restive west by pro-government militants. It was the first major clash since government planes bombarded rebel positions for three days in November, killing a reported 85 civilians according to a rebel toll. More than 100 heavily-armed militants waged a pre-dawn attack near Logouale, some 450 kilometers (270 miles) northwest of the main city Abidjan, having crossed the confidence zone dividing the rebel north from the government south, deputy rebel spokesman Antoine Beugre said.
