Pakistan has broken the back of terrorism in the country, killing and arresting hundreds of militants and destroying the structure of their organizations, the president of the Islamic nation said Thursday. Pervez Musharraf, who survived two assassination attempts by militants linked to al Qaeda just over a year ago, said an army offensive in semi-autonomous tribal areas along the border with Afghanistan had led to the capture of guerrilla bases and forced the leaders into the mountains. “We have had tremendous success over terrorism. Their back has been broken and they are on the run,” the president told an audience of government ministers, military and media at his official residence in Islamabad.
