A leftist rebel deserter killed seven of his comrades before fleeing his clandestine camp in central Colombia, police said Wednesday. Identified only as “Sergio,” the 22-year-old fighter with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, made his escape early Tuesday morning amid constant mistreatment by his superiors, Maj. Sonia Sanchez, police spokeswoman in Huila state, told The Associated Press. When guards realized he was fleeing, he shot them and other comrades who were sleeping, Sanchez said. Only one person in the camp, a female FARC member, survived the shooting near the town of Colombia, 90 miles southwest of Bogota, she said. Full Story
