Ivory Coast gunbattle leaves two dead

Police briefly battled a pro-government militia in a gunfight that left two dead in Ivory Coast’s commercial capital, officials said. Police dislodged the militia from a girl’s school they were using as a training camp after a skirmish that left one civilian and one militia member dead, said Farikou Soumahoro, an aide to the local mayor of Adjame, where the gunbattle occurred. Witnesses said police surrounded the school and exchanged gunfire with the militia before military chief of staff Colonel Major Philippe Mangou arrived at the scene to negotiate an end to the fight.
