Although citizens did not attend the first public Benton County Hazard Mitigation meeting on Tuesday evening, planners are well on their way to helping reduce the impact of natural disasters. The County Hazard Mitigation planners come from city and county administrations, fire departments, emergency services, hospitals, schools and businesses throughout the county that all have a stake in reducing or eliminating risks from natural hazards. One hazard planning member, Gentry School Superintendent Randy Barrett, said his school district is thinking proactively and seeking federal funding for building a safe room while constructing the gymnasium to reduce the hazards of a tornado.
