Philippine President Gloria Arroyo vowed Tuesday to crush the Al-Qaeda-linked Abu Sayyaf after the group claimed three Valentine’s Day bombings which killed 12 people and left over 130 injured. The authorities also stepped up security around airports, ports, bus terminals, shopping malls and foreign embassies after Monday’s attacks in Manila and the southern cities of General Santos and Davao. The Abu Sayyaf said the attacks were retaliation for the Philippine military’s “atrocities” during an ongoing operation against Muslim rebels on the island of Jolo, in the extreme south of the Southeast Asian archipelago.
