Rep. Peter King (R-Seaford) was appointed yesterday to head a new Homeland Security subcommittee that will oversee the nation’s response to terrorism and look into the way federal funding is distributed to help first responders prepare for attacks. The subcommittee on emergency preparedness, science and technology will hold its first hearing today and will examine the potential impact of President George W. Bush’s proposed budget. “I’m ready to hit the ground running,” King said yesterday. King, the only New Yorker on the committee, said one of its priorities will be to push for change in the homeland security funding formula so areas more vulnerable to attack get a bigger slice of federal grants. Tri-state lawmakers complain the formula gives more per capita to some of the least populous states and distributes a minimum to every state regardless of risk. Full Story
