THE SENIOR commander of all United States forces in the Pacific and Indian Ocean yesterday affirmed continuing US commitment to help the Philippines upgrade its military capability and combat terrorism, including the presence of the al-Qaeda-linked Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) in Mindanao. “I think the JI is the principal concern in the region and we’re working very closely with the government of the Philippines to make sure that the JI is not present in the Philippines,” Admiral Thomas Boulton Fargo, commander of the US Pacific Command, told reporters after his farewell call on President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo yesterday morning. Fargo is ending his tour of duty as senior commander of the US military, air, ground and naval forces in the Pacific and Indian Ocean region, which accounts for more than 50 percent of the earth’s surface, includes 16 time zones and borders 43 countries inhabited by more than 60 percent of the world’s population.
