A truck carrying hazardous materials caught fire Saturday on Interstate 81, prompting State Police to close an eight-mile stretch of the highway and evacuate six homes as a precaution. No one was injured and residents were returned to their homes, 1st Sgt. R.P. Chappell Jr. of the Virginia State Police said. All but one lane of the highway was reopened six hours after the fire began. The truck was traveling south on I-81 at approximately 8:30 a.m. when the driver noticed he had a flat tire and his brakes had caught fire. The driver pulled the rig over and police responded, closing the highway south of Harrisonburg, from Weyers Cave to Verona north of Staunton. Full Story
