Former US president Bill Clinton’s role as the United Nations’ special envoy for tsunami relief will not include involvement in the peace process between Indonesia and separatist rebels in Aceh province, a UN spokesman said Wednesday (2/2/05). UN spokesman Fred Eckhard said he was correcting a statement he made Tuesday when announcing Clinton’s appointment. Eckhard had initially said the UN wants to “capitalize on the openings that it has afforded both Indonesia and Sri Lanka to make political advances with the rebel movements in those two countries”. But on Wednesday he said Clinton’s duties would not extend to involvement in conflict resolution in the two countries. Full Story
