More than 50 local, state and federal response teams converged on the Apollo Pool Wednesday to test their skills in the event of a terrorist attack. The drill was held to test the readiness of the Regional Counter-Terrorism Task Force, which would be mobilized if a real disaster were to occur. In yesterday’s scenario, a terrorist group had set up a laboratory in the Apollo Pool building to make VX gas, a toxic gas used by the Germans during World War II. Joe Cocciardi, the lead facilitator for the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency (PEMA), said the purpose of the drill was to coordinate the efforts of groups from local volunteer firefighters to the regional task force to state and federal agencies.
